Highlights from TLTA’s 2025 Land Title School of Texas 

On March 2-5, more than 175 title professionals from across Texas gathered at the Sheraton Georgetown for TLTA’s 2025 Land Title School of Texas. This premier training program provided attendees with a comprehensive understanding of Texas title insurance practices, from the basics to complex transactions.



We extend a heartfelt thank you to our Executive Committee, School Committee members, and the outstanding speakers who made this year’s program a success. Their expertise and dedication helped deliver valuable insights on avoiding costly mistakes, mastering essential skills, and navigating complex topics with confidence.

TLTA Member in Action: Matt Proffitt, CTIP Shares Insights at PRIA Winter Symposium

Matt Proffitt, CTIP, Senior Vice President of Title Operations at Security Service Title Company and TLTA Legislative Committee and Regulatory Committee member, spoke at the Property Records Industry Association (PRIA) 2025 Winter Symposium in San Antonio on March 5.

Matt participated in the Symposium's Closing General Session, What Counties Wish Submitters Knew and What Submitters Wish Counties Knew, where he discussed the importance of reviewing documents to ensure they are in recordable form. He emphasized how clear, accurate submissions reduce rejections and make future examinations easier. Matt also highlighted the importance of a strong partnership between agents and county clerks to improve efficiency and maintain record integrity.

Mark Lewis Named President of Edwards Abstract and Title Co.

Mark Lewis, CESP, CAEP, CTIP, NTP, has been named President of Edwards Abstract and Title Co., succeeding his father, CEO Byron J. Lewis. The surprise announcement was made earlier this month at the company's 21st Annual State and Real Estate Forum.

Lewis previously served as Vice President of Operations and currently chairs TLTA’s Certification Committee, where he helps advance professional standards in the title industry.

In Memoriam: Than McCracken

APRIL 27, 1965 - MARCH 2, 2025

It is with sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Than McCracken, owner of Guaranty Abstract Company in Graham, Texas.



In addition to his industry involvement, Than was a member of the Young County Masonic Lodge #485 where he was a former Grand Master, Rotary Club of Graham, and Graham Savings & Loan Board of Directors.
