VIDEO: It’s Your Ship: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy

The Jordan Harbinger Show | July 23, 2019
Mike Abrashoff is a former Naval Commander, leadership and teamwork expert, and author of the New York Times bestseller It’s Your Ship: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy.

At age 36, Mike Abrashoff was the most junior commanding officer in the Pacific fleet when he was selected as Commander of USS Benfold. At the time, this was one of the worst-performing ships in the Navy. Morale was low, turnover was high, and the previous commanding officer was literally booed off the ship after leaving command. Just one year later, with the same crew under Mike's leadership, it was ranked number one in performance.

In this interview with Jordan Harbinger—who shares successful people's insights and perspectives via one of the most popular podcasts in the U.S.—Abrashoff discusses leadership strategy and tactics, organizational culture, and more.

ICYMI: New TDI Rules for All Texas Licensed Escrow Officers and Title Agents

License Renewal Grace Period Is Ending – Be Prepared

In December TDI Commissioner Sullivan adopted new title licensing rules to implement statutory changes recently made by the Texas Legislature. The changes officially went into effect March 7, 2019; however, TDI implemented a six-month grace period before any license renewals were due. Renewals will begin this fall and will be staggered over the coming year based on the escrow officer's birth month.

THC hosts and organizes maintenance and stewardship training workshops for county officials and staff. Since March 2007, TLTA has partnered with THC as a sponsor of the annual Texas Courthouse Stewardship Workshop. The workshop is designed for counties that have received funding through the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program and have completed their projects, or are in the process of doing so. The workshop is a unique opportunity to hear from guest speakers and THC staff on the preventive maintenance challenges and solutions for historic county courthouses.

TLTA and its members have provided funding for the Texas Courthouse Stewardship Awards, as well as the Texas Courthouse Stewardship Workshops. On Oct. 10, 2016, TLTA received the 2015 Texas Historical Commission Governor's Award for Historic Preservation for our industry's continued support for the Texas Courthouse Stewardship Program.

TLTA Past President Bruce Liesman Retires After Long Career

Bruce Liesman retired in August from his position as vice president and chief Texas counsel with National Investors Title Insurance Company, after having served with the company since 2010 and after nearly 40 years of service as title insurance underwriting counsel in the Texas market. Over the past nine years, Bruce has been an essential asset to the National Investors team and Texas-based agents as a result of his unparalleled experience and the valued underwriting guidance he has provided.

Prior to joining National Investors, Bruce’s professional career as underwriting counsel spanned 29 years, including 10 years as general counsel for several Texas title insurance companies. He has been a frequent speaker and teacher at educational programs for TLTA, the State Bar Association, and the Texas Real Estate Commission. Bruce served as TLTA President 2005-06 and assisted in the development of curriculum changes to the Basic Title School in 1990 that were used for more than 20 years. In 2005, Bruce testified at HUD hearings in Washington, D.C., on proposed changes to RESPA, and, in 2009, TLTA awarded him its highest honor: Title Person of the Year.

Born in Cuero, Bruce is a fifth-generation Texan. He graduated from the University of Texas and from the UT School of Law.

TLTA congratulates Bruce and thanks him for his many years of outstanding service to the Texas title industry.
