"Kumbaya Session" Becoming a Distant Memory

During the 83rd legislative session, lawmakers worked together with such collegiality and bipartisanship that some observers began calling it the "Kumbaya Session." Gov. Rick Perry has ensured no one will affix that label to the current special session — and maybe to a second one, if it comes to that. The state's longest-serving governor called the current 30-day session at the end of last month for the redrawing of the political boundaries. Water and Education Bills Take Next Steps

This week marked a beginning and an end for some major legislation from the 2013 session. On Monday House Bill 5 ended as Gov. Rick Perry signed the legislation to revamp the state’s public education accountability system and graduation requirements. Groups have also emerged that support a constitutional proposition to spend $2 billion dollars from the state's rainy day fund to jump-start water infrastructure projects. Read More »

FHA Could Stop Charging Extra Interest on Mortgage Payoffs

Pressured by consumer protection regulators, the Federal Housing Administration is expected to end one of its most controversial practices: charging borrowers interest on their home mortgages for weeks after they've paid off the entire principal balance. FHA officials declined to discuss the agency's long-standing policy of collecting a full month's worth of interest — hundreds of dollars extra in many cases — even when borrowers terminate their loans earlier. TDI Call for Statistical Data Has Not Been Issued
TLTA has received several inquiries about the annual statistical reports and when the call to submit data may be issued. We've confirmed with the Texas Department of Insurance that the call was delayed and has not gone out yet, but the standard 45 days to complete the information after notification will still apply. We will notify you as soon as the call has been issued and let you know the deadline for submitting your report.
