Texas Legislature 89th Session Update

The bill filing deadline for the 89th Session is a little more than two weeks away. Senate Committees are holding full hearings and we can expect the same from all House committees within the next two weeks. 

Sen. Zaffirini files legislation included on TLTA’s affirmative legislative agenda for the 89th Session

We are pleased to report that the Dean of the Texas Senate, Sen. Zaffirini, has filed SB 1547, which will clean up a conflict in the law regarding the charge for electronic copies of real property records. This conflict was an inadvertent consequence of a bill passed last session.

Gov. Abbott's Emergency Items – Property Taxes

While committees are beginning to meet on bills and development of legislation continues capitol-wide, much of the legislature's energy and momentum is focused on development of the state budget and the session’s emergency items, which Gov. Abbott laid out in his State of the State Address earlier this year, including property tax reduction.

Revised Overview of Corporate Transparency Act. As Reinstated March 21 Deadline Approaches, Who Is Required to Report BOI?

There have been a host of stories about the 2021 federal Corporate Transparency Act (“CTA”) in the news lately due to multiple ongoing lawsuits and proposed legislation. Orders issued in those lawsuits have alternatively stayed and reinstituted the effectiveness of the CTA and its reporting requirements. This article aims to recall the basic outline and obligations of the CTA and explain the current status and deadlines of the reporting requirements.

Texas’ Adoption of ALTA Endorsements Gives Energy Projects Greater Title Coverage

The Texas Department of Insurance recently adopted some of the “ALTA 36” series of title endorsements available for energy projects in ALTA states. The new endorsements give energy projects in Texas specific coverages previously unavailable on Texas title insurance policies.

FBI Advisory Warns Of Dangerous “Ghost” Ransomware Attacks

A joint security advisory published Feb. 19 by the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, AA25-050A, has warned organizations around the world of a dangerous ransomware group known as Ghost, which is carrying out ongoing attacks targeting multiple industry sectors across more than 70 countries.
