6,107 Bills Filed, Committee Process Begins

Last week proved to be a busy week for TLTA at the Texas legislature complete with hearings and the bill filing deadline.
Heidi Junge of Stewart Title testified on behalf of TLTA in a hearing by the Senate State Affairs Committee on SB 462, a bill which would establish a process for Transfer on Death Deeds in Texas. Heidi shared the concerns of the TLTA Legislative Committee as well as highlighted some of the suggested changes that we plan on submitting in order to amend the bill.

Our affirmative agenda also made progress as SB 584 by Uresti, clarifying how correction instruments are to be indexed, was heard in the Senate Intergovernmental Relations committee. TLTA legislative committee chair Mike Savas testified on behalf of TLTA and answered questions in what was a very positive and friendly hearing. The House companion, HB 1943 was referred to the County Affairs Committee and we hope to secure a hearing soon.

Friday was the bill filing deadline. We are pleased to report that there was no bill filed that would challenge our system of rate regulation. However, there were a number of bills filed on the last day with a total of 6,107 bills filed this session, including 1,999 in the Senate and 4,114 bills in the House. We are in the process of reviewing, flagging, and tracking these bills now and will keep you updated on any that affect the title industry.

TLTA's Acclaimed CFPB Readiness Training Comes to Houston Next Week - Seats Going Fast!

TLTA is proud to announce it will be holding its third TILA/RESPA Training session in Houston on March 24th as part of the Readiness Training Series that began in Dallas and continued in Austin last month. Both the Austin and Dallas were near sellouts and evaluations have been overwhelmingly positive from the 400+ attendees.

Participant feedback includes  “This was one of the best events I have attended in a long time. It was well organized and very valuable!"

This class gives you the tools you need to prepare for and implement the necessary changes in your operation required by CFPB. Providing a more in-depth discussion than has previously been offered, it features a detailed line-by-line walk-through of the new closing disclosure, a look at the changing roles and responsibilities of settlement agents and lenders, and a review of the new timelines for transactions.
