CFPB Hosts Field Hearing in El Paso

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) hosted a field hearing in El Paso last Thursday to discuss the Bureau's consumer complaint portal, specifically whether it's working, how customers are using it and how institutions are responding. While the event did not focus on the title insurance industry directly, the mortgage industry and privacy concerns were discussed. The event also featured remarks from CFPB Director Richard Cordray, which you can read here. A video recording of the event will also be available on the CFPB's blog shortly here.

We would like to thank the following TLTA members for attending:
Ty Hendrick with Sierra Title Company, Inc.
Dean Inniss with Rocky Mountain Mortgage Company
Thelma Padilla with Lone Star Title Company of El Paso
Sawyer Sikes with Lone Star Title Company of El Paso

ALTA Releases Second Best Practices Readiness Guide

The American Land Title Association (ALTA) has released its second Assessment Readiness Guide to help members determine if they are prepared to undergo an assessment to determine compliance with ALTA's "Title Insurance and Settlement Company Best Practices." The recently released guide is for the seventh pillar of the Best Practices, which requires companies to adopt and maintain written procedures for resolving consumer complaints. The Assessment Readiness Guides are available exclusively to ALTA members. ALTA previously released a guide for pillar No. 1 of the Best Practices, which addresses establishing and maintaining the required licenses to conduct business.

ALTA's Board of Governors is encouraging members to conduct a self-assessment of their adoption of ALTA’s Title Insurance and Settlement Company Best Practices no later than September 2014. Read more about the best practices here. TLTA will also be providing educational programming this fall on practical ways for agents to get in compliance.
