CFPB Fines Real Estate Firm for Steering Consumers to Title Affiliate

An Alabama real-estate firm owned by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. agreed to pay a $500,000 fine to settle a U.S. regulator's allegations the company failed to fully inform home buyers they could shop around for a firm to handle their real estate closings. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said Birmingham, Ala.-based RealtySouth did not adequately inform consumers of their ability to choose a title firm to provide title insurance and run the closing process. RealtySouth is owned by HomeServices of America Inc., the real-estate division of Berkshire Hathaway.

TLTA Hosts Meeting With County & District Clerks Association
This week, TLTA hosted a meeting with representatives of the County and District Clerks' Association of Texas (CDCAT) to discuss shared priorities for the 84th Legislative Session. The group discussed issues including correction instruments, county surveyor field notes, rescission documents, open records and legibility standards. The meeting was very productive and the groups agreed to continue the dialogue in the coming months.
GSE Reform Faces Uncertain Future

Housing finance reform legislation passed the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee on May 15 but its future is uncertain. “I remain concerned that this bill in its current form does not do enough to produce a housing market that works for middle class America,” Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass) said. The legislation would phase out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and replace the Federal Housing Finance Agency with the Federal Mortgage Insurance Corporation (FMIC). The FMIC would provide insurance on certain mortgage-backed securities and regulate the secondary mortgage market.
